Talisman Wilderness Trek
Wilderness Treks are hiking adventures for teens ages 14-17 with LD, ADD, ADHD, or Aspergers. Following several days of preparation, participants hike one of the most beautiful sections of the Appalachian Trail for 14 days. This challenging and impactful program focuses on cooperation, communication, decision-making, goal accomplishment, and increased self-esteem.
Girls' Trek is just two weeks long, with 7 days of hiking. Our girls will also hike along the Appalachian Trail and take on the same adventure challenges as the boys. Girls are traditionally our strongest hikers, and in this group will be encouraged to do their personal best while working as a team to accomplish their goals.
Personal Growth
Trek teaches participants in an experiential way skills and strategies they need to navigate through their lives. Participants are empowered to make decisions and take responsibility for their choices with peer and staff feedback. They are able to focus on peer relations in a manageable social environment, building meaningful friendships, and learning the importance of self- and group-reliance as they work together toward a common goal. The physical challenge promotes patience, perseverance, and the ability to regulate oneself during stressful situations.
Activities
The wilderness context of our trekking program provides an exciting backdrop for participants to consider the long term consequences of their actions while building memories that will last a lifetime. Participants first prepare for their hike on the Appalachian Trail, a trail renowned for its rugged beauty and awe-inspiring views. After teaching basic wilderness and technical skills, staff gradually hands over responsibility to the participants. The group takes on the challenge of moving through the woods and making their own decisions.
Interwoven into the design of Trek are other high-adventure activities that encourage our participants to step past their comfort zones and discover new levels of success, including a high ropes course, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting.
